Architecture: Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
When I was in Berlin I visited the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. It’s an enormous memorial in the middle of Berlin, one block away from the Brandenburger Tor. This memorial was build between April 2003 and December 2004, and it was inaugurated on May 10, 2005, sixty years after the end of World War II.
The site is covered with 2711 concrete blocks which vary in height from 20 cm to 4,8 meters (7.9 inches to 15 ft 9). The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe also referred to as the Holocaust Memorial is a great reminder of how good our lives are without war. This were innocent people that were murdered for no reason and it is not that long ago. My grandparents suffered real bad in World War II, because there wasn’t enough food in Holland. My grandmother still can’t throw away any food, not even when it’s not longer tenable and we can’t use the word ‘hunger’ because “we don’t know what hunger is”.
When we came to the memorial we just hung out a bit and made a lot of pictures. I don’t know if it’s aloud but everybody is sitting and standing on the concrete and children play hide and seek.
